Mardi 01 juillet 2025, depuis le Vatican, le cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, archevêque de Kinshasa, a exprimé son soutien indéfectible à l’accord de paix signé le 27 juin 2025 à Washington entre la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) et le Rwanda.
Dans une interview accordée à la presse sur place, le prélat congolais a salué « une avancée significative vers la paix et la stabilité dans la région des Grands Lacs ». Il a également appelé les parties prenantes à faire preuve de bonne foi dans la mise en œuvre des engagements pris.
En effet, le cardinal Ambongo a souligné que « le peuple congolais a trop souffert. Cet accord représente une lueur d’espoir pour des millions de vies. L’Église catholique accompagnera ce processus pour qu’il soit durable et juste. »
Cet engagement de haut niveau arrive à un moment crucial, alors que la communauté internationale suit de près les développements de cet accord historique signé aux États-Unis, sous médiation américaine, après des années de tensions meurtrières entre la République démocratique du Congo et le Rwanda.
Il convient de noter que l’accord a été établi le 27 juin 2025 à Washington, grâce à la médiation des États-Unis, en présence de la Secrétaire d’État américaine, du Secrétaire général de l’ONU, ainsi que de divers représentants de l’Union africaine. La délégation congolaise était conduite par Mme Thérèse Kayikwamba, ministre d’État aux Affaires étrangères, tandis que le Rwanda était représenté par son ministre des Affaires étrangères.
